Pastoral Council

What is the Pastoral Council?

A parish pastoral council is the chief consultative body to the pastor. Consultation is a sharing of wisdom which enables the parish to carry out its mission. Under the direction of our Pastor, the pastoral council discerns issues that impact the lives of parishioners; prays, studies, and discusses those issues; and recommends practical ways of addressing them.

Selecting new leaders to serve the Parish Pastoral Council is an important moment in the life of the community. Pastoral Council members are called upon to reflecton the life of th eparish in light of the mission of the Church and to assist the Pastor in bringing greater life and vibrancy to the parish.

How are Pastoral Council Members Selected at St. Mark Catholic Church?

The process for selecting new members to the St. Mark Pastoral Council involves three steps: nomination, orientation, and discernment.

Candidates may self-nominate, be nominated by other parishioners or receive nomination by our Pastor. All nominations are made using the St. Mark Pastoral Council Interest Questionnaire.

All potential candidates are required to attend a night of orientation. This orientation session usually lasts about an hour and includes a presentation on the basic of Pastoral Council and Pastoral Planning as well as logistics and a time for questions. The night ends by asking nominees to consider and pray over what they have heard and if they still feel called to come to Discernment. They are presented with three questions and asked to consider their responses if they decide to attend the Discernment Retreat.

  1. What gifts do you bring to the ministry of Leadership and the Pastoral Council?
  2. Please share your favorite Bible verse or spiritual reading and describe how this reading affects you and why?
  3. If you could give all the poeple of our parish an injection of some spiritual gift or spiritual life, what would it be and why?

Discernment Retreat

Discernment of Pastoral Council members is generally a three hour retreat that involves prayer, reflection, open conversation, and, most importantly, an oppenness to the Holy Spirit working within our midst to call forth the disgnated candidates. This is a facilitated prayerful listening and consensus session held in the intimate setting of the St. Mark School Chapel. The nominees enter into this process by first sharing their answers to the questions presented at orientation and listening to everyone else as they offer their answers to the same questions. At the conclusion, candidates and the four Executive Council members (Chair, Vice-Chair Secretary and retiring Chair), name those who have agreed to be considered for membership on the Parish Pastoral Council. Those elected will be asked to serve.
